SHEPARD FAIREY / 944 LA

Shepard_944_MT

Yesterday on my way out of the office i ran across the 944 newsstand up here at the plaza and this cover caught my eye and took me back to a time where street art and wheat paste intersected circa 2003. The Los Angeles icon Shepard Fairey has built an empire of clothing and media based around the “GIANT” iconography.  Now we continue to see the evolution of Shepards artistic reach, its still great to see that he “gets up” in the city, the only question i have is if he still is the one jumping fences and scaling walls, i know that his crew is deep.  I know that Shepary has inspired many to cover the walls of this great city with statements and amazing imagery and i continue to see that poster art is alive and well with new artists rising to the call and going to greater heights to challenge one another.

I just want to thank the crew over at 944 for always supporting MOSLEY TRIBES with amazing editorial featuring the Merchant (above) and the Burke (below) dont sleep on these styles, they are heaters for the summer.

The Art of Sound

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Screen shot 2011-03-03 at 3.10.01 PM

I have been in a dry spell when it has come to new music, but when had the opportunity to see Sacramento based quartet Sister Crayon live @ Spaceland back in the fall of 2010 i was instantly hooked.  The refreshing and ethereal sound of Sister Crayon was a welcoming sound that really moved the crowd and with there new release i am continually impressed by the creativity and high caliber musicianship.

Sister Crayon started out as something small and quiet at first,  vocalist Terra Lopez started as a solo artist playing classical guitar and pre-programmed beats on a loop pedal to attentive house crowds. With the addition of members Dani Fernandez (MPC 1000 and Microkorg), Nicholas Suhr (Drums and Percussion) and Jeffrey LaTour  (Keyboards, Synths, Guitars, etc.),  Sister Crayon has emerged as a four-piece whose emotional live performances along with their styles of ambiance, hip-hop, and “hysteria” have created a stir with their EP release, “Enter Into Holy (or)ders”. With their debut LP entitled “Bellow” that was released this week.  The song Souls of Gold (above) is my favorite off their recent EP release.

SC recently collaborated with the talented photographer Eliot Lee Hazel and really killed it.  The photography is really on point and the refreshing landscape of the sea paired with early American settler themes is very interesting.

Tiger Tortoise

WWD_tiger_tort_MT

This weeks issue of WWD Mens featured the new up and coming style called the Burke by MOSLEY TRIBES in Tiger Tortoise, which is a custom color that the MOSLEY TRIBES team created specifically for this season. The Burke is such a great style that will be coming to the marketplace very soon.  The keyhole bridge mixed with the smaller round optical inspiration is really hot in the streets right now and was well received last week at our press preview day in New York.  And this press hit only reiterates our feelings on how strong this colorway is and will be with the consumer.

andy-warhol-camouflage-exhibition-honor-fraser-0

The Honor Fraser team has begun to assemble an impressively comprehensive collection of Andy Warhol’s Camouflage series for an exhibition on the West Coast, the likes of which have never been seen. The event will showcase Camouflage canvas silkscreens and for the first time, prints from the series, alongside with previously unseen test proofs. The series was created by taking photographs of camouflage fabric, cutting the patterns into layers and then screening them onto canvases. The exhibition will run from October 30 until February 5, 2011 and will be accompanied by a catalogue designed by Brian Roettinger and with an essay by Vincent Fremont.

MT_Event

This week, the first showing of “A Native Perspective”
For their Summer 2010 campaign, Mosley Tribes teamed up with LA-based multi-media group, The Social Trust, to create a featurette documentary, spotlighting the region and the characters that inspired the brand this season. This 15-minute short will focus on the art-centric metropolis of Santa Fe, New Mexico, a scenic wilderness wonderland influenced by local Native American culture. The color selection of laminates, lenses and textures used in the Mosley Tribes 2010 Summer/Fall collection reflect the region and some of the enigmatic personalities who call New Mexico home. Highlights include interviews and commentary with artists of Native American descent who reside and work in the area. Darren Vigil Gray, a prominent artist renowned for his abstract landscapes and portraits, allows the Mosley Tribes team exclusive access to his studio to observe and document some of his creative process.  Also featured in the film is renowned contemporary painter Tony Abeyta incorporates bold colors, rich textures and representations of Navajo deities in his work. Both share thoughts and stories about the history of their craft and discuss how the Santa Fe region affects and inspires their work.
