Our on the street corespondent Angie who works here at the OLIVER PEOPLES offices cruised over to Santa Monica this weekend to catch the exhibit of the 7th Letter Crew at the Bergamont Station, so sick!
In Angie’s words… If you’ve lived in Los Angeles long enough and have left your house on a constant basis, chances are you’ve come across a piece or two done by the masters of Los Angeles graffiti art, The Seventh Letter Crew (T7L). Their work has appeared everywhere in Los Angeles, on billboards, along freeways, and most notably, on the ramparts of the Los Angeles River. The seventh letter is of course “G” and in this particular case, the “G” stands for “Gods of Graffiti.” More than a 100 “gods” make up this racially diverse group of highly gifted artists and muralists with careers that span over twenty years.
Within The Seventh Letter Crew are smaller crews that write together, the most elite known as Angels will Rise, or AWR. The members of AWR are part of an exhibition up now at the Robert Berman Gallery located at Bergamont Station in Santa Monica. The exhibit, “Will Rise,” consists of 70 panels; each artist contributing six 4-by-4 foot panels, that fit together to represent what an outdoor mural might look like. The exhibit is relatively small, but the inspiration it feeds is on a much larger scale. The pieces are bold in color and in size, installed from floor to ceiling. The exhibit’s curator, Brett Aronson tried to create the effect of a subway terminal covered in graffiti. I would say…”mission accomplished. “
