Yesterday Patrick and I took a mid-day trip to the Moca Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles to check out an art exhibit by the legendary contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. After learning that the exhibit was actually at the Geffen Contemporary at the Moca, and a brisk 20 minute walk we arrived at our destination. The exhibit was mind blowing to say the least and worth every step. Murakami, who works in both fine arts media such as painting; as well as digital and commercial media, transformed the gallery into another world. It was seriously like entering some form of Japanese outerspace. There was everything from adult content life-size sculptures, to the most intricate and colorful wall treatments, to psychedelic mushroom art, to full screen Kanye West music videos and Japanese Anime, and even his world renowned Louis Vuitton patterns. Before I entered, I really had no idea what I was in for, and when I left I was a different person. It was like entering an Adult version of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. If you live anywhere near the Los Angeles area, you must go check this out, apparantly the exhibit is up till February 11. So that should give most people enough time. After getting mentally transfixed, Patrick and I decided it was neccesary to hit up one of J town’s finest food establishments. After 40 minutes of waiting for some ramen and curry rice we chowed down heavily. I’m not sure if there was something in the ramen or if it was Murakami’s art, but something about all that Japanese in our afternoon, had us feelin peculiar.
